Point Orion at Traxelio

  1. 1

    Capture an Orion fingerprint

Confirm a binary USERLOG whose type nibble is 0, not a SYSLOG type 3 record.

  2. 2

    Point Orion at 5070

Configure only Orion to TCP 5070. Orion on 5070 is not OpenGTS on 5159 or Noran on 5053.

  3. 3

    Watch for a star reply

If bit 0x40 is set, Traxelio answers a 4-byte star record. That reply is not proof of a map point.

  4. 4

    Prove one Orion fix

Send one USERLOG item with 3 or more satellites and non-zero lat/lon on 5070 and verify a map point.

Orion still not landing

Orion aimed at the wrong port

Orion on 5070 is not OpenGTS on 5159 or Noran on 5053.

Star reply, assumed plotted

The star reply only echoes trailing bytes when bit 0x40 is set. Check the map, not the socket.

FAQ

Orion leftover questions

Does Orion plot SYSLOG type 3 records?

No. Only USERLOG type 0 records plot. SYSLOG is framed and then dropped.

When does Orion send a star reply?

When bit 0x40 is set on the USERLOG header. The reply is '*' plus two trailing bytes from the record.

How many satellites plot an Orion fix?

Three or more. Fewer than three will not plot.

How is Orion speed stored?

An unsigned short in 0.1 km/h units.

Can an Orion unit run a controlled-action flow on this row?

This dialect is positions only.
