Overview
The Verizon Connect OBD-II Tracker plugs into the OBD-II diagnostic port that every passenger car and light commercial vehicle sold after 1996 in the United States carries. No wiring, no tools, no appointment with a mechanic. You plug it in and it shows up in the Verizon Connect platform.
That simplicity makes it the go-to choice for two scenarios: fast rollout across a large fleet where per-vehicle wiring would take weeks, and short-term deployments where permanent installation is not warranted, such as a rental fleet or a seasonal vehicle pool.
The tradeoff versus a hardwired unit is exposure. Because the OBD-II port is accessible from inside the cabin, a driver or a thief can unplug the device. Fleets that have theft concerns or need tamper-evidence typically use hardwired units for those specific vehicles. The OBD-II tracker also draws power from the port, so battery drain on a vehicle that sits idle for several days is worth checking against your specific vehicle make.
Vehicle compatibility is broad. Most cars, vans, and light trucks with an OBD-II port work. Heavy commercial vehicles with different diagnostic port standards typically do not, and that is where a hardwired or asset tracker becomes the right choice instead.
If you are evaluating OBD-II trackers across multiple vendors and want a software layer that is not locked to a single hardware brand, Traxelio supports devices that communicate over standard cellular protocols.
