What is TAC (Type Allocation Code)?
Every IMEI starts with a TAC. GSMA issues that 8-digit code to a manufacturer for a specific model (or approved variant). The remaining digits identify the single unit and carry a Luhn check digit. Traxelio catalogue work uses TAC evidence to map incoming devices to the correct model page — a TAC is shared by many units of the same model, while a full IMEI is unique to one device. TAC sits in the same identifier family as IMEI (device), IMSI and ICCID (SIM), and MEID (legacy CDMA device id).
How it works
- GSMA allocates an 8-digit TAC to a manufacturer for a model.
- The factory builds IMEIs as TAC + serial + check digit.
- Many trackers of the same model share one TAC.
- Platforms and catalogue tools use TAC to classify model family before the full IMEI identifies the single unit.
- Do not treat a TAC alone as a unique device id for connect or binding.
Key facts
- Names the manufacturer and model family without exposing a single unit
- Lets catalogue and support tools map a device to the right model page
- Shared by many units — expected, not a duplicate IMEI defect
- Sits beside IMEI, IMSI, ICCID, and MEID in the cellular identity mix
