GPX and KML Viewer

Open a GPX, KML or KMZ file and see the track on a map with its distance, duration, speed and elevation. Convert between GPX and KML. The file stays in your browser.

Reading your file

The map tiles did not load. The track is still drawn: hide the basemap for a plain view.

Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap: it sees the area you view, never your file.

GPX, KML and KMZ compared

The three track file formats
FormatHoldsCommon use
GPXTracks, routes and waypoints with time and elevationGPS devices, fitness apps and trip logs
KMLLines, areas and placemarks, usually without timeGoogle Earth and map overlays
KMZA zipped KML with its imagesSharing KML as one small file

What you see for each track

  • Distance along the track, measured between consecutive points.
  • Duration, average speed and top speed when the points carry timestamps. Speeds below 1 km/h count as stopped.
  • Elevation gain and loss when the points carry elevation. Changes under 3 metres are ignored as GPS noise.
  • Very long tracks are thinned out for drawing only. The statistics use every point.

How to convert GPX to KML or KML to GPX

  1. Open your file above.
  2. Check the track on the map.
  3. Choose Download as GPX or Download as KML.

A KML without timestamps gives a GPX without time, so speed and duration stay empty.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

GPX is a GPS exchange format for tracks, routes and waypoints, with a timestamp and elevation on each point. KML is the Google Earth format: it draws lines, areas and placemarks, and usually carries no timing. KMZ is a zipped KML.

No. The file is read in your browser. The map tiles are fetched from OpenStreetMap, which sees the area you look at but never your file.

You can open 1 file right away. Confirm your email to open up to 20 files together.

Most KML files only store positions. Speed and duration need a timestamp on each point, which GPX files and Google Earth tracks usually have.

Elevation changes below 3 metres are ignored so GPS noise is not counted as climbing. The distance is measured along the track in a straight line between points.
