How to convert decimal degrees to DMS

  1. The whole number is the degrees: 40.7128 gives 40°.
  2. Multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.7128 × 60 = 42.768. The whole number is the minutes, 42′.
  3. Multiply the new decimal part by 60: 0.768 × 60 = 46.08. That is the seconds, 46.08″.
  4. Add N for a positive latitude and S for a negative one. Longitude uses E and W.

So 40.7128 becomes 40° 42′ 46.08″ N.

How to convert DMS to decimal degrees

Add the degrees, the minutes divided by 60 and the seconds divided by 3,600. South and west values are negative.

40° 26′ 46″ N = 40 + 26 / 60 + 46 / 3600 = 40.446111

What the converter accepts

  • One pair per line, latitude first, separated by a comma, a semicolon or a space.
  • A letter N, S, E or W before or after each number. With letters, the order of the pair can be longitude first.
  • Degree, minute and second marks as symbols (° ′ ″), as quotes, or just spaces.
  • A header line with lat and lng is skipped. Lines that cannot be read are listed with their line number.
