Mileage Calculator

Paste one trip per line: a date, the distance and an optional purpose. We apply the official mileage rate for the date of each trip and add it up. Nothing is uploaded: the calculation runs in your browser.

The rate drops after a set distance in a year. Leave this empty to start from 0, and keep all trips in one tax year.

Enter a real date and a distance above 0.

Try an example

One trip per line: date as YYYY-MM-DD, distance, then a purpose. The date can be left out and then means today. Use a semicolon between the fields to write a decimal comma.

Official mileage rates in use

These are the rates the calculator applies today, each with the date we last checked it against the official source. A trip uses the rate in force on its own date, so a trip before and a trip after a mid-year change are priced differently.

United States United Kingdom Canada

How the mileage deduction is calculated

Multiply the distance of each trip by the rate in force on its date, then add the trips up. For example, 100 miles at a rate of 0.50 a mile is 50.

Some rates drop after a set distance in a year. In the United Kingdom the car rate is lower after the first 10,000 business miles, and in Canada the allowance is lower after the first 5,000 kilometres. When a trip crosses that line, the calculator prices each part at its own rate.

Worked examples

  • United Kingdom: a 20 mile trip that starts 10 miles before the 10,000 mile line is priced in two parts, 10 miles at £0.55 and 10 miles at £0.25, £8.00 in all.
  • United States: the business rate changed on 1 July 2026. 100 miles driven the day before are worth $72.50, and 100 miles driven on that day are worth $76.00.

What to keep in a mileage log

  • The date of every trip, written when you drive it rather than months later.
  • The distance, taken from an odometer or a route you can show again.
  • The business purpose, such as the client or site you visited.
  • The odometer reading at the start and end of the year, so the total can be checked.

Read what a mileage log must contain

The CSV log has the date, purpose, distance and amount for each trip, ready for a spreadsheet or your accountant. This page is a calculator, not tax advice: check which rate applies to you with the tax authority or an accountant.

Which rate to choose

  • United States: the IRS standard mileage rate is one way to deduct business use of your own car. The other is to deduct actual costs.
  • United Kingdom: the approved rates are what an employer can pay tax free for business travel in your own vehicle.
  • Canada: the figure shown is the allowance an employer can pay without it being taxable. Self-employed drivers usually claim actual expenses instead, so treat it as a reference.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the country and the type of trip. The table on this page lists the rates the calculator applies today, with the date each was checked against its official source.

Each trip uses the rate in force on its own date. The United States business rate rose from 72.5 to 76 cents a mile on 1 July 2026, so a trip in June and a trip in July are priced differently.

Write down the date, the distance and the business purpose of each trip when you drive it, and note the odometer at the start and end of the year. The CSV from this page gives you that list in one file.
